Tommy Sheridan is standing in the Glasgow North East by-election on 12 November. Standing as a "Workers' MP on a Worker's Wage" for Solidarity - Scotland's Socialist Movement - Tommy contrasts strongly with the disgraced former incumbent, Michael Martin (now Lord Martin of Springburn), whose resignation as Speaker and as an MP, triggered this by-election, in an area that has been represented by Labour since 1935.

Socialist Party defeats Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein
IN 2007 Bertie Ahern won a third successive general election, bringing Fianna Fail close to an overall majority. In 5 June Bye Election Ahern’s nominee, his hapless brother Maurice, came fifth in the Bye Election in the Dublin Central constituency which they had dominated for decades!

Joe Higgins’ stunning victory in the Dublin Euro Constituency, getting 12.5% of the first preference vote, out polling Sinn Fein and defeating two sitting MEPs, was the final part in a weekend of drama and great election results for the Socialist Party in Ireland.

"The Best Fighter Money Can’t Buy" Socialist Party candidate Joe Higgins has won the third seat in the European Parliament elections in Dublin, beating Fianna Fáil candidate and sitting MEP Eoin Ryan and Sinn Fein’s MEP Mary Lou McDonald. Joe was elected on the 7th count with 83,366 votes. He was declared elected at 5.15am and was joined in the celebrations by party members, supporters and his mother. Joe Higgins told the Irish Times - “European countries are dominated by right-wing governments which are trotting out the same capitalist policies as here in Ireland and making working people pay for their mistakes.” Joe Higgins pledged to unite workers in Ireland and across the EU.
